The term cancer refers to over 100 different diseases in which there is an unrestrained proliferation of unneeded cells, either within an organ or body tissue. If a portion of a replicated cell's DNA is damaged, the cell can become abnormal. When the abnormal cell divides, it forms new cells that contain a photocopy of the damaged genetic material. The term carcinoma refers to cancers of the skin, mucous membranes, glands, and organs. Leukemia refers to blood cancer. Sarcoma refers to cancer of the muscles, connective tissues, and the bones. Lymphoma refers to cancer of the lymphatic system.
